Last night I went to a business networking event and there were more than 250 other business people there.
I was asked what we do at Mycra Lawyers. I said I help people remove defaults from their credit ratings so they can get the finance they’re after and I began to explain how studies reveal that there are more than three million (3,000,000) people out there with the type of bad credit that we might be able to remove or correct.
I explained that most of these people probably don’t even know about the defaults as in many cases, the creditors may not have notified them the default was being added.
Believe it or not, this is a polished turd
Many of these defaults were due to a one off event and that these were mostly good people that had had bad circumstances. Things like a serious illness, a bad relationship break up, loss of a job, Identity Theft, or even simply disputing a bill…
In many cases, if the client was aware they’d be defaulted, most would have paid the bill long before it resulted in a bad credit rating.
This is the point where one person said with a sly smirk, “Yeah, but you can’t polish a turd”
I was offended for every client. I wanted to wipe that smirk off his face but Mum always told me to behave in public…
I said to (lets call him ‘X’) X, what do you mean, “you can’t polish a turd”?
X said, “If these people just paid their bills on time, they wouldn’t have this problem.”
It’s unfortunate that people that haven’t been through something as traumatic as a death in the family or the loss of a job etc can sit on their high horse and judge.
I have been bankrupt. It is a major part of why, since 2003, my focus has been on helping people with bad credit issues.
In 1999, I took on a business partner who believed it was in my best interest if he helped himself to money that he had encouraged me to borrow… I was naive.
Long story short, he left me with no cash and no way to pay the bills that I believed had already been paid…

Many are held back by defaults that may actually have been placed unlawfully. It is our job to uncover what legislation or compliance breaches have occurred and to then instruct the creditor to remove the unlawful default.
Historically this has happened in up-to 91.7% of cases. That’s a better than 9 out of 10 success rate.
So, back to polishing a turd…
When I heard this statement, apart from making my blood boil at the shortsightedness of it, it reminded me of an episode of Myth Busters where they in fact proved you can polish a turd…
So, to all the Naysayers out there that seem to believe a person’s mistake defines them for life, I say phooey to you…
Our clients are good people that have had a ‘turd’ of an experience that deserve a second chance and that’s what we aim to do. To give them that second chance that they deserve.
Just because they went through a messy breakup and their partner ‘forgot’ to make the payments that they said they’d make, or they were focused on their family when they had a death in the family and overlooked the credit card bill… Or they sold their house, told the energy company “connect the [new address] on this date, disconnect the [old address] on this date as we are moving” then the energy company sends the final bill 3 months later to the old address… then because it’s not paid, they get a default???
This stuff happens all the time and don’t get me started on the rising number of Identity Theft issues that cause even more grief and are definitely nothing to do with the victim…
If you get a potential client or meet someone that may have a bad credit rating, don’t be an ‘X’, show some compassion. It’s likely that it’s not a fair judgement. It’s likely it’s unlawful and it’s likely it can be removed.
