Dylan gave his energy retailer, EnergyAustralia, the right address when he signed up. Somewhere along the way, it recorded the wrong one.
He only realised a year later, when the retailer finally called him and mentioned an address he’d never lived at. He told them so. They then told him his name, address and phone number didn’t even exist in their system.

Dylan paid $100 out of goodwill to make it go away, on the basis that it would be resolved and nobody would contact him again. It wasn’t resolved. A default for about $500 went on his file, later held by a debt buyer, Panthera Finance.
What it was doing
Dylan discovered the default when he applied for finance and was declined. He wanted a home loan.
What we found
Panthera Finance took a while to respond because it was waiting on information from EnergyAustralia. When the picture came together, two things stood out. The bills had been going to the wrong address. And Dylan had disputed the account, and asked to have his name removed from it, before the default was listed.
Why it came off
We sent a complaint arguing the default couldn’t be listed while Dylan was disputing the account, and that he had called to take his name off it. The default was removed.
The result
The default came off 64 days after we started. Dylan could apply for his home loan.
What this means for you
