Adam applied for a home loan and found a default on his credit file from a large energy retailer. It was under $200. He’d never heard of the account.
How it got there
It turned out a former employer had set up business energy accounts in Adam’s name, without his permission. He knew nothing about them until the business collapsed and the debts came looking for someone to land on.

He had never lived at the supply addresses. He had never agreed to the accounts. Still, there was his name on a default.
What was at stake
A small default can be enough to stop a home loan. Adam’s broker referred him to us because he wanted this cleared before he went any further with his application.
What we found
At first the retailer wouldn’t budge. It said the default had been listed correctly. We escalated the matter to the energy ombudsman with evidence that Adam had never been at those addresses.
Why it came off
Through the ombudsman process, the retailer accepted that Adam wasn’t liable for the accounts. They had been set up by his old employer, and he could show he was never at the properties. The default was removed.
The result
We started on 24 February. The default was removed on 6 June, 103 days later. Adam could proceed with his home loan.
What this means for you
If a debt on your file isn’t yours, you shouldn’t have to pay it to make it go away. Evidence of where you actually lived can be powerful. If the creditor won’t listen, an ombudsman complaint often changes things. Our credit repair lawyers handle these escalations.
