Sarah’s credit file looked fine at a glance. No defaults. No judgments. Her broker still had a problem, because her credit score was low, and the reason was a row of enquiries from small loan and personal finance lenders.
She needed a home loan. Lenders read a cluster of enquiries as a sign that someone is shopping around for credit and maybe getting knocked back. It drags your score down even when you’ve never missed a payment.

Why enquiries matter more than people think
Every time you apply for credit, the lender’s check is recorded on your file. It stays there for five years. One or two don’t matter much. A string of them, close together, can sink an otherwise clean application.
What we did
Sarah’s mortgage broker referred her to us. We wrote to three of the lenders behind the enquiries and asked each one to justify keeping its listing on her file.
Why they came off
Each lender had its own reason for agreeing.
- The first agreed to remove its enquiry on compassionate grounds, because the credit was never actually approved.
- The second couldn’t locate the original contract or application, so it couldn’t support the listing.
- The third had actually lent to Sarah, and agreed to remove its enquiry because it didn’t want a past customer harmed by it.
The result
We sent the first requests on 29 January. One enquiry was removed that same day, and the other two by 30 January. Within a day, three enquiries were gone and Sarah was a big step closer to a home loan approval.
What this means for you
Enquiry removal isn’t automatic, and a valid enquiry for credit you genuinely applied for usually stays. But where a lender can’t produce the paperwork, or the credit never went ahead, there may be room to move. Our credit repair lawyers can tell you quickly whether your enquiries are worth challenging.
