Peter did the responsible thing before he moved overseas. He told Telstra he was going.
Telstra didn’t ask him for a forwarding address. The account went overdue without Peter getting a single letter or call. A small default, around $300, went on his file. Later, a debt buyer, Credit Corp, took it over.

What it was doing
Peter had two defaults on his credit report. He wanted to buy a property, and his broker told him both had to go.
What we found
This one dragged. Credit Corp took more than 30 days to supply the documents we asked for and was slow to respond to our complaint.
The facts were on Peter’s side, though. He had told the telco he was moving overseas. It had a chance to get an address for him and didn’t take it. He never received any mail or calls about the debt.
Why it came off
We lodged a complaint with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. Telstra agreed to remove the default.
The result
We started on 5 August. The default came off on 27 February, 206 days later. Both of Peter’s defaults were removed and he could confidently apply for finance.
